Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A vast caldera and a shared landscape

What it's like

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is not a national park. It is a multiple land-use area where Maasai pastoralist communities live alongside wildlife, and it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its best-known feature is the Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera whose floor holds grassland, swamp and a seasonal lake. Views from the crater rim are among the most memorable on a northern route.

Things to do

  • Crater-floor game drives
  • Viewpoints along the crater rim
  • Combining with Lake Manyara, Tarangire or the Serengeti

Planning notes

Travel considerations

  • Crater descent rules, vehicle permits and fees are set by the conservation authority and will be confirmed in your proposal.
  • The rim is high and can be cold and misty, particularly early in the day.

Seasons

The crater can be visited year-round, though weather and road conditions vary with the rains.

Draft guidance — access rules, fees and seasonal details are confirmed in your proposal.
